Search Help

This search can be used to find specific words or phrases in the text of the Bible. Simply enter your search keywords or phrase in the query box and click the search button. It is possible to search the Bible either by verse or by chapter:

  • Verse - Each verse of the Bible is searched individually for the words of your query. The matched verses are then displayed in order of their relevance to the query.
  • Chapter - The words of entire chapters of the Bible are searched for your query and then displayed in the same way, in order of relevance.

If a verse or chapter contains any of the words of your search query, it will be returned. However, the more frequently the search words appear, and the closer those words are to each other in the text, the more relevant that verse or chapter will be judged to be. Therefore, if you're searching for a specific phrase in the Bible, for example searching by chapter for: in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, Genesis 1 is more likely to listed before a chapter where some or all of those words appear, but scattered throughout the text of that chapter.

Note: If you do not wish to search, but just wish to read a specific passage of the Bible, for example Exodus 2:5, you should follow the Browse Bible link above.

Search Tips
  • Word Stemming - All search words are subjected to a stemming algorithm, so that searching for creating, created, create or creates will give identical results.
  • Capitalisation - Any capitalisation of words in the query is ignored, so searching for David will return exactly the same results as searching for david.
  • Punctuation - Any punctuation in the query is also ignored, a search for David's is identical to a search for Davids.
  • Stop Words - Certain common words, such as the or and are removed from the query prior to the search so as to produce more meaningful results. For example, searching for in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth is identical to searching for beginning God created heaven earth (or due to word stemming and ignoring capitalisation, also identical to searching for begin god create heaven earth).
  • Word Order - The order of the words in the query is irrelevant; so a search for begin god create heaven earth, as in the previous example, is the same as searching for create god heaven earth begin.
